Featured in this lot is this 5 1/4" Pre Columbian Eastern Woodland hand axe. The hand axe is wonderfully and professionally crafted light flint material that was knapped into a sharpened with a rounded edge at one side and is sharpened around to the other side where is knapped into a point. These hand tools were used without mounting to a haft and likely for lighter work than their counterparts with hafts and coverings. The condition of this hand axe is well preserved with no obvious signs of diminishing damage to the artifact and shows well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this hand axe is 5 1/4" x 2 7/8" x 1 1/8". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts.
