Featured in this lot is this 5 1/4" Pre Columbian Woodland Period grooved club head circa 1000BCE - 1000CE. The club head features a wonderfully and professionally crafted stone construction that shows a polished demeanor with a groove to one end to make it easier to to attach to a haft. The Woodland period of North American pre-Columbian cultures lasted from roughly 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. The term was coined in the 1930s and refers to prehistoric sites between the Archaic period and the Mississippian cultures. The Adena culture and the ensuing Hopewell tradition during this period built monumental earthwork architecture and established continent-spanning trade and exchange networks. The condition of this of this club head is well preserved with some wear marks from age to the outside edges of the club head and to the tip of the club head but otherwise is in well preserved condition. The measurements of this club head is 5 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 1 5/8". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts.
