This 4pc tea service is crafted from dark-bodied stoneware with a black finish, characteristic of Egyptian Black or black basalt style ceramics from the Staffordshire region of England. The collection consists of a teapot with lid, a creamer, an open bowl, and a lidded jar. The teapot, creamer, and jar are impressed on the underside with the initials F.G.W. The teapot, creamer, and bowl feature a compressed globular form decorated with a molded relief frieze of floral and vine motifs. The teapot is distinguished by a spout terminating in a molded dragon head. The lidded jar displays a more complex molded relief of fruiting vines and butterflies, surmounted by a figural finial of a seated squirrel eating a nut. The decoration is achieved through molded relief techniques standard for Staffordshire dry-bodied stonewares of the period.
