4pc Mercury Glass Grape and Floral Motif Curtain Tie Backs
Set of four antique mercury glass curtain tie backs featuring hand-etched decoration. This group includes two tie backs with a grapevine motif and two with a floral spray motif. Each tie back is bulbous in form with a rounded front, tapering to a metal collar and screw fitting for wall mounting. The reverse sides are flattened for stable mounting against a surface. The silvered interiors are visible through the blown glass, a technique characteristic of mercury glass production. Mercury glass, also known as silvered glass, was developed in the mid-19th century as an affordable alternative to silver. It is created by blowing double-walled glass and coating the interior cavity with a silvering solution, often a mixture of silver nitrate and sugar water. The result is a bright, reflective surface with a silvery appearance. The threaded metal screws and collars remain attached, with some surface rust and oxidation present. The fronts of the tie backs retain their reflective quality and display clear etched designs of grapes and flowers. Dimensions are stated as approximate, including the screw, and may vary slightly.
