ALS from Charles S. Ramsay of the 44th Ohio Infantry Band. Accompanied by cover. Datelined ''Point Pleasant Va Oct 3rd 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''…When I last wrote you I had no doubts that this would be our last week in the service but things are in a very unsettled condition and there is no telling now when we will get off…we have a letter from Gov Tod stating that…we were already mustered out by an order from the War Department…Some of the families of the members of the Band are dependent upon the tender mercies of their neighbors and friends for sustenance and the Gov. indebted to us for over five months pay. They owe me over and above my indebtedness nearly eighty dollars yet I could get nothing…This is truly an interesting situation to be placed in but I still hope we will be sent home soon. and when we are if the U.S. ever gets me into the service again it will be when it is in more desperate straits then at present…'' The 44th Ohio Infantry saw its most significant action in the rout of Confederate forces at Dutton's Hill, Kentucky. Charles S. Ramsay mustered into service on 8 October 1861 and mustered out on 8 October 1862 at Covington, Kentucky. Ink letter measures 8'' x 13.5'' and runs 2pp. Fine condition.
