I slept in their quarters last night and took charge of them night before last. The long roll was beaten about midnight and soon the camp was in arms. the alarm was caused by the firing of the pickets. One of the companies were out scouting and came across the cavalry Co that had been circulating around this section and fired up on them the pickets heard the firing and gave the alarm. The scouts killed one horse and captured another but did not succeed in capturing any of the Rebles. The Zouaves were the first out and went through the manual of arms before any other Co. came on the ground. The colonel order the men to go to their quarters but to keep their accoutrements on and be ready to fall in at a moments notice…'' The 44th Ohio Infantry served primarily in Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky.
