This is a black ostrich feather Officer's bonnet circa 1900. It has four feather tails and black ribbons at the back. It has a red/white/black checkered band of the regimental pattern and a silver and gilt regimental badge bearing the number "42" in the center with "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT" around it and a sphinx underneath. There is a scarlet feather or red hackle above the badge on the left side. The hat is supported by a wire framework and there is a maker's mark inside. With an Officer's glengary cap circa 1885. Blue wool with red wool pom. Silver star and St. Andrew cross, gilt garter circle surmounted with Victorian crown. Gilt sphinx beneath. "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT" within the garter with a silver "42" in the center. There are two "sphinx/EGYPT" badges on either side at the rear.

Condition: The bonnet is very good showing mild wear with the leather chin strap absent and some aged patina on the badge. The ribbons have a few tears. The glengary is also very good with some mild wear and some aged patina on the silver badge. The sphinx badges show some aged patina.
