This fragment of silk is from the National Colors of the 40th New York Volunteer Infantry, also known as the "Mozart Regiment." The flag was presented to the regiment by New York Mayor Fernando Wood at Yonkers, N.Y., on July 3, 1861. According to regimental records, the flag was made of the finest silk expressly for the regiment. The flag was carried at the battle of Ball's Bluff and through the battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863. At the battle of Fair Oaks, Va., in 1862, every man in the color guard (16) were either killed or wounded carrying this flag! The 40th N.Y.V. also saw action at Fredericksburg, Bull Run, Gettysburg, and throughout the Virginia campaigns of 1864-65. This fragment was preserved by Sergeant Christopher Lutjens. 6 1/4" by 8 1/4".
