This is a nice set of American Southern made late classical Empire side chairs. This set of chairs date from the 1840's and are made of the finest Cuban crotch flame mahogany and mahogany veneers. The newly upholstered Champagne colored dupioni silk slip seat chairs are stuffed with Southern Spanish moss. The chairs are attributed to Thomas "Tom" Day, African American master cabinetmaker Thomas Day (1801-1861), of Caswell County, North Carolina, he had an outstanding career and achieved remarkable social standing during the antebellum period.
Thomas Day was a free black who lived in the Dan River town of Milton. He was educated, owned property and slaves, ran a successful business that made furniture for some of the state?s most prosperous white citizens, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Milton. Day would embellish tables and chairs with classical exaggerated ''S'' curves, bulbous turnings and exuberant cutouts, scrolls and curve designs, unique flourishes for which he is best known.

This set of four chairs have curved Gondola saber legs. The chairs have scroll shaped pierced back rail and carved Neo Classical acanthus leaves crest rail. The price I'm asking for 4 chairs I have seen one chair like this go for.

The chairs are in good original condition with some wear for the age of the chairs, there are some cracks to the veneers and small rim chips to it on the front seat rails. One chair has old iron supports to the back. Height of chairs 31" 1/2 by 18" wide ...
