This lot features three significant volumes on the history and artistry of photography, each offering a unique perspective on the evolution of the medium and its practitioners. The first, Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry by Penny Wolin (Los Angeles: Wolfsbane Editions, 2014), is a hardcover volume with dust jacket that presents an extraordinary photographic and oral history project. The book is richly illustrated with both color and black-and-white photographs. The author has signed the title page. The second title, Dorothea Lange: Photographs of a Lifetime (New York: Aperture, 1982), is a softcover monograph chronicling the career of one of America's most iconic photographers. Best known for her searing depictions of the Great Depression, Lange's images are presented here alongside excerpts from her own writings and interviews, tracing the evolution of her vision and empathy. Featuring more than eighty plates, including the legendary Migrant Mother, this volume stands as a testament to Lange's enduring humanism. Completing the trio is On the Art of Fixing a Shadow: One Hundred and Fifty Years of Photography, edited by Sarah Greenough and others (Washington, D.C.: National Gallery of Art, 1989). This hardcover edition with dust jacket was published in conjunction with the landmark Smithsonian exhibition marking photography's sesquicentennial. It provides a comprehensive survey of the photographic medium from its nineteenth-century origins through its contemporary developments, featuring an extensive array of plates and essays by leading scholars. Together, these volumes form a cohesive set celebrating photography as both art and document, spanning its pioneers, innovators, and visionaries.
