A collection of three pieces of 19th century American paper currency. The group includes: a 1896 $1 United States Silver Certificate, known as the "Educational Series," depicting Martha Washington at left with intricate green and red engravings; a 3rd Issue 10 Cent Fractional Currency note featuring the portrait of William M. Meredith, with a red Treasury seal and ornate green reverse; and a January 1, 1863 State of North Carolina Ten Cents note, issued from Raleigh and bearing engraved bee skep imagery symbolizing industry and prosperity. These notes illustrate the evolution of U.S. and Confederate currency during and after the Civil War era.
