It has splendid portraits Lewis and Clark flanking an American Bison, known by us unlettered folk as a buffalo.

The portraits of Lewis and Clark were engraved by George Smillie. Smillie produced some 300 portrait engravings over his career, including many presidents, vice presidents, cabinet members and the like (The Bison's name, by the way, was "Pablo.") Although the reason for the selection and production of this design remains a mystery, it is quite possible that its choice was influenced both by the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, as well as the upcoming 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Oreg on.
Estimated Value $9,000-11,000.

Our item number 121592
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
