36 Star Flag on Original Wooden Mast. 36 Star Flag
36 Star Flag This flag came to us from a family who believed that their relative carried this flag during the final part of the Civil War. While we do not have the provenance to substantiate this story, it is a fascinating family legend which accompanies this spectacular piece of history. The lot features a 36 star flag on a wooden mast. The official 36 star flag had several designs, from the Great Star flag to the Wagon Wheel design. This version does not appear in any of the official records, however, as quickly as flags were put out, often times many were made before the official version was settled upon. This flag has six rows and six columns of stars all perfectly aligned on the canton. The soldier who carried this flag, according to family lore, was Jefferson Standridge. Standridge fought for the Union in two separate units; the 5th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia Cavalry and the 12th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He served from 1861 until 1865. In 1864 Nevada was added to the Union and the 36th star was born. This flag is aged heavily, the white stripes and the field are very soiled and stained. The textile has begun separating in places from age and rolling. The flag is no longer attached to its mast. Despite the aging, this flag will make a gorgeous display piece either framed or mounted. A great piece of history with a touching family legend to accompany it!
