approx. 85" x 90" cotton; originally had sleeve hoist. Large central star; stars sewn on both sides of canton. Possibly started as a "Great Star" flag and stars were added through the years, since the arrangement is mostly random now. Mostly hand-sewn, but a few stripes machine-sewn.

Numerous manuscript notes, especially in the central white stripe. More or less in order of time:
Emma McNutts Flag made for Grant & Colfax 1868.
Below is a list of political campaigns:
New Center for Hayse[sic] 1876
Garfield 1880
Blain 1884 was beaten but waved my colors for him just the same
Patched for Harrison & Morton 1888.

Below this: See this German Day Aug 16th 1893 I wave for the Dutch with a list of women's names: Missis Nickles, Pearl Woodruff, Grace Smith, A. Lewis, A McKimm, plus a few unreadable.

Near the other end of the stripe:
Decoration Day 1898 I waved my colors as of old but under difference [illeg.]
Maude McGee "The way we do in Paulding" / "That is what I thought"
New Patch for Dewey Day, July 4th 1989, Extra patch to wave for Geo. Sampson
I must swing for the brave Sidney Boys Company L 3[illeg] O.V.I. before I go in the rag bag.
Am 30-years-old this year, But will wave for victory over Spain / Hip! Hip! Hurrah! / For Dewey and our Boys also followed by a long list of women's names, presumably women whose sons, husbands were with Dewey and Sampson.

There are similar notes on the hoist: year made, maker, etc. The notes on the next white (full-length) stripe are partially illegible. On the short stripe that ends at the canton it notes Memorial Day 1902 with another list of women's names.

Condition: Toning, splits, especially around the ink. Numerous patches and repairs, as the ladies indicate.
