36-STAR AMERICAN FLAG. A wool 36-star flag, 48 x 70", machine made, with repairs to fly, cotton stars machine sewn on one side, blue cut out and hand-hemmed on verso, hoist edged with linen with 2 steel grommets. The 36-star flag became official in 1865 with the admission of Nevada to the Union, and lasted for only 2 years. This flag has stars arranged in 6 rows of 6 stars. The flag has numerous tears, mostly from use and age. The white cotton of the stars is lightly toned, with small holes in one; there is a frayed area on the canton near the hoist, upper fly edge; several areas of separation in stripes.
