35 STAR CIVIL WAR AMERICAN FLAG. Approximately 68" x 114". History states flag was made for a brother's service in Co. B 32nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry by sister, Mary Yetter. Christian Yetter Long served in Co. B 32nd Illinois. He was promoted to 1st Lt. And served until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, and with Sherman with Sherman's campaigns including the march to the sea. Canton consists of seven rows of five dbl appliqued cotton stars. Stripes are printed. Canton sits on the red "war" stripe. Stripes on flag consists of twelve red, white and blue stripes instead of the typical red and white stripes. Hoist is made from a single cord looped into eyelets which run through hemmed edge of flag. A most unusual configuration for a documented Civil War flag. The second stripe of flag has hand sewn piece of cloth with "The Union" stenciled on it. A letter from Howard Madaus accompanies. CONDITION: Overall good condition with numerous repairs. The entirety of flag is sewn to a backing so it can be easily displayed. 4-53399 JS31
