"Bringing Up Father" Jiggs Toba
A wonderful chalk Tobacciana advertising statue of the famous cartoon character "Jiggs" of "Maggie & Jiggs" from the famous cartoon created by George McManus that ran from 1913 into the 1950s, 10½x5½"; the figures stands on a circular base that is incused with the name "Father" and emblazoned on the front of his shirt is "I Smoke Edgeworth Tobacco." Jiggs is handpainted with black evening coat, pants and spats. His hair and lips are painted a cinnabar red, with a red-tipped nose, hand-drawn eyes and eyebrows, and a "cigar" sticking out of his mouth (Jiggs always had a cigar in his mouth in the cartoon). Some light scuffing, mall paint chipping, and dirt smudges, but no breaks or repairs. This figure would have been on display in tobacco shops. Accompanied by a partial sample page of the cartoon from the Boston Advertiser Sunday, April 1, 1923, with a 1972 book entitled "Bringing Up Father," showing hundreds of Maggie & Juggs cartoon strips.
