Letter from musician Isaac Van Tasek of the 33rd New York Infantry, Company A. Written in pencil and datelined ''Manassas, Friday June 20 /62,'' letter reads in part: ''…From the present aspect of things, I should think we would be discharged in a month or so. That Bill has passed both branches of Congress. It provides that Bands shall be discharged within 30 days from its passage. The Band of the 88th Penn. is mustered out today. They got their Col's signature to an application and the Sec'y of War gave a discharge. We prefer to get ours the other way if possible. I don't feel so anxious about it as the rest of us. I should be willing to stay 2 or 3 months longer…Very likely we may march in a day or two. Some think it will be towards Richmond…'' Isaac Van Tasek mustered into Company A on 22 May 1861 and mustered out on 2 June 1863 at Geneva, New York. During their two years service, the 33rd New York was engaged in battle at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Gaine's Mill, Malvern Hill, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 2pp. Mild chipping to lower left edge, otherwise near fine condition.
