8pp. letter from William O. Abbott of the 33rd Massachusetts Infantry, Company F. Accompanied by cover. Written in ink and datelined Alexandria, Virginia, October 1862, letter reads in part: ''…the 33rd Regt Mass Vols is one of the best behaved and most orderly of any that has ever encamped or done Provost duty near or in this city…Taking from our ranks 150 or 200 men I believe the remainder may be ranked with those who are generally classed with the moralists and well disposed men. They are not church going men and care little for the Gospel ordinances…the majority…are rapidly turning into the more open and dangerous paths of sin…The officers of the regiment I believe all use liquor…without a single exception and the privates only imitate their example. The chief vice or the one most marked is that of profanity This is possibly no more prevalent than the drinking. Those who resist this sin in all its forms are very rare…Col Magg told the regt last Sunday that both intemperance and profanity must cease…But of what avail is it for him to threaten or punish while he is guilty of the same crimes…I heard him on the next day Monday after the above order use profane language…We shall march without fail in a couple of days as we have been relieved from doing…duty It is not determined yet whether we shall ride or walk. Our destination is Centreville…At any rate we expect to find the enemy soon…'' Abbott mustered into Company F on 5 August 1862 and mustered out 20 June 1865. After he wrote this letter, the 33rd Massachusetts Infantry went on to fight at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Kennesaw. Ink letter measures 5'' x 8''. Light soiling and minor separation at folds, otherwise near fine condition.
