72” x 114” all hand sewn single ply wool bunting, double applique 3.5” cotton stars in 6 rows of 5 with 3 stars apparently added later, but by same hand and same materials. Embroidered on the fly edge of one white stripe are initials “H Mc 1”, 1.5” heavy cotton leading edge with two large hand whipped grommets. Two family letters state this flag flew over first Post Office in Chicago and it was possibly made by Sarah McClellan. it would be interesting to research this family, and see if there was another member of family with the first initial “H”. The blue canton Is pieced and repair to a center red stripe by hoist repaired with different material. 33 star flag was official at the beginning of the Civil War, but changed July 4th 1861 with the admission of Kansas as 34th state. If the three stars were added to the original 30-star flag as family legend stated, that flag would have been official in 1848. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2 letters & 1 envelope.
