33 Plays Bound Together, London, 1779-1781
A sammelband of 33 English plays (one incomplete), published 1779-1781. Most are indicated As it is acted at the Theatres-Royal in Drury-Lane Covent Garden, and Printed in London for Harrison & Co., No. 18 Paternoster-Row, and sold by J. Wenman, Fleet-Street, and all other Booksellers (except where noted otherwise). Some of the plays have no publication information. Authors include Addison, Garrick, Steele, Fielding, Jonson, and Shakespeare. 8vo (9" x 5 1/2"). Paper over marbled boards, white kidskin spine. The last page of the last play is glued to the pastedown. There is a total of 14 engraved plates of famous actors in roles. The plays are listed in order, as bound, below. Condition: Boards are considerably worn/faded; spine is worn/soiled. Pages are overall in Good condition, but for what looks like a burn spot on the pastedown and first page, extending through about three more pages; some page edges are frayed, and corners frayed/and or folded; there's occasional light spotting and toning throughout, and additional specific issues as noted with each title below. 1. Preceded by two plates, depicting Mrs. Lefsingham and Mr. Garrick in character. One plate has a large tear/loss at top, and one has a sizable stain (neither issue affects the images). 8. A Comedy. 1780. There's a large (1" wide by 5 1/2" long), dark brown (liquid?) stain on the first page, extending through about four more, and another smaller such stain on the last page. 18. ADDISON [JOSEPH]. Cato. A Tragedy. Printed for J. Wenman, 1777.  Preceded by two plates, depicting Mr. Garrick and Mr. Sheridan in character.  19. HOADLEY [JOHN]. The Suspicious Husband. A Comedy. Printed for J. Wenman, 1777. 20. DODSLEY [ROBERT]. The King and the Miller of Mansfield: A Dramatic Tale. Printed for J. Wenman. 1770. 21. HOME [JOHN]. Douglas. A Tragedy. Preceded by two plates, depicting Mrs. Barry and Mr. Foote in character. 1770. There is a dampstain that extends through the top of several pages of Douglas, with two small holes and a tear. 22. FOOTE, SAMUEL. The Mayor of Garratt. A Comedy. 1780. Small tear at the top of the last page. 23. GARRICK, DAVID. Lethe. No publication information, n.d. 24. HIPPSLEY [JOHN]. Flora; or, Hob in the Well. No publication information, no date. 25. CIBBER [COLLEY]. Ximena; or, The Heroick Daughter. A Tragedy. 1780. 26. MALLET [DAVID]. Alfred. A Masque. 1781. Preceded by a plate of Mr. Reddish in character. The plate is detached, with two written marks in the margins, and a stain that extends into the image. There is a 5-in. tear across the middle of the title page; a 1 1/2-in. tear on second page.  27. CIBBER, COLLEY. Myrtillo. A Pastoral Interlude. No publication information, n.d. There is only a single leaf; appears incomplete. Dampstained, small hole in title line, top corner is almost torn off; written note at bottom of page. 28. HILL, AARON. Alzira. A Tragedy. 1779. Preceded by two plates, depicting Miss Young and Mr. Wright in character. First plate has soiling within the image and folded page edge; the second folded at bottom and slightly detached. 29.
