This original cast bronze statue by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) depicts a lovely female in classical robes with staff and likely represents an allegory of work or time. It measures an impressive 33 by 12 by 14 inches (83.8 by 30.5 by 35.6 cm). Cast signature reads "CARRIER BELLEUSE" and there is no foundry mark. Inscription on the front plate reads "La Fourmi n?est pas prêteuse: c?est là son moindre défaut" which translates to "The Ant is not a lender: that is its least defect". The line is taken directly from les Fables de La Fontaine, specifically La Cigale et la Fourmi (The Cicada and the Ant), the moral fable which promotes the virtues of work and planning. This item resides with our client in northern New Jersey and may be seen in person by appointment.
