2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) - Douglas Trumbull Collection: Set of 35mm Camera Negatives and Contact Sheets Shot by Douglas Trumbull During Production and Sold with Copyright - A set of 35mm camera negatives and contact sheets taken during the production of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey by the film's special photographic effects artist Douglas Trumbull. Trumbull took photos of Kubrick, the actors, and the production offices and during his personal time while in the United Kingdom for the film.

This set, which originated from the collection of Trumbull, consists of six manila folders filled with 35mm camera negatives and original contact sheets shot by Trumbull. The folders contain 31 strips of 35mm camera negatives with nearly 200 images between them and 13 black-and-white contact sheets depicting over 400 images, all of which include their copyright. Over half of the negatives are production-related with the rest being personal photographs of the Trumbull family's time in the U.K. The contact sheets depict nearly all of these production images along with many other personal photographs shot at the same time. Some of the negatives come in hand-marked envelopes or sleeves. Also included are digital files of scans of all of the negatives. This lot exhibits discoloration to the envelopes and sleeves. Dimensions: (largest) 9.5" x 12" x 0.25" (24.25 cm x 30.5 cm x 0.75 cm)Visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull was born in Los Angeles in 1942. After abandoning architecture for technical drawing and cartooning, his talent for photorealism soon earned him work at Graphic Films, an esteemed Hollywood studio for which he designed groundbreaking cosmic effects for the 1964 New York World's Fair. After seeing Trumbull's work, director Stanley Kubrick hired him to create animations and VFX shots - including the iconic Star Gate sequence - for what would become his seminal masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. From that film's success, Trumbull became one of the industry's most trusted photographic effects experts, designing and producing legendary screen moments in such sci-fi landmarks as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner, all three of which earned him Academy Award& reg; nominations. In addition to directing the cult classics Silent Running and Brainstorm, Trumbull later received a Scientific and Engineering Award for his high-speed photography process Showscan in 1993, one of two specialty awards given to him by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before his death in 2022. 60 years since he first made his mark on global cinema, Propstore today celebrates Douglas Trumbull by presenting a selection of rare memorabilia from his personal collection to the public.
