St. Columba the founder of St. Gall, Bobbio and other European Monasteries depicted in Benedictine cassock. St. Colm Cille, the dove and scribe of the Celtic Church depicted in tonsure and holding a book. And St. Gobnait, who was a Celtic pagan Goddess adopted by the early Christians and an almost exact same statue as this but bigger and made of stone stands in St. Gobnaits Church Yard in Ballyvourney Co. Cork. These carved wood depictions are all copied from the old Irish scribes books and from carvings in medieval churches around Ireland.
They are in immaculate condition and have an impressive presence and bearing on a room, very admirable all together. I can't tell where exactly they were carved, I have seen similar bases in Swiss and Southern German statues too. I would think they are either from Ireland or otherwise a monastery on the German/Swiss border and then came here to Ireland. Judging by the Patina they should be between 75-125 years old. All are hand carved by a master carver from Oak and at one time surely were accompanied by St. Patrick. This is a very rare to find group for collectors or an Irish home.
