These are three bronze medals minted by the Moscow Mint. The first medal was minted in commission of the USSR Academy of Science to commemorate the 70th birthday of the pioneer of the Soviet missile and space programs and founder of the practical space exploration, Sergei Korolev. The medal depicts recto the portrait of Korolev and reads ‘S. P. Korolev 1907-1966’ in Cyrillic. The Roman number ‘LXX’ is depicted left to the portrait. The reverse depicts the hands of a designer drawing the Vostok spacecraft. This side also shows the words of Korolev that were published in the newspaper Pravda on December 10, 1957.

The second medal commemorates Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), the first man in space. The bronze medal displays recto the portrait of Yuri Gagarin in high relief and inscriptions in Cyrillic, as well as the dates 1961 to 1991, marking the 30th anniversary of Gagarin’s first manned flight into space. Gagarin is wearing a space helmet with the capital letters ‘CCCP’. The medal depicts verso a space scene with stars and inscriptions in Cyrillic.

The third medal was crafted on the occasion of the 1. International Andrei Sakharov Memorial Congress ‘Peace, Progress and Human Rights’ in Moscow from May 21 until 25, 1991. On the front side the medal depicts Sakharov in half figure, as well as his biographical data, 1921 to 1989. Verso is a map with roses adorning the countries and the title of the congress. Sakharov was a Russian physicist, who became famous as the ‘father of the Soviet fusion bomb’ and who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.

The three medals are overall very well preserved with some minimal signs of wear. The medals are 60 to 65 mm in diameter.
