This lot comprises three bottles of 1988 vintage Château Pape Clément from the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Bordeaux.

The Pessac-Léognan appellation is part of the Graves wine region, south of the city of Bordeaux. Vines thrive on the Ice Age gravel terraces, producing first-class mineral red wines made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and some Merlot and Cabernet franc. Aside from Château Haut-Brion, the region’s iconic Premier cru classé, Pape-Clément and Smith Haut-Lafite are the leading wine growers of the region. The appellation is also the home of intense, powerful dry white wines. Cuvées made from Sauvignon blanc and Sémillon are aromatic and structurally characterized by Sauvignon blanc.

1988 was the first in a trilogy of truly great vintages. Although it is often overshadowed by the following years of 1989 and 1990, it is considered the most classic of the three.

The 1988 vintage Pape Clément was rated 92 points by Robert Parker in 2003. James Suckling rated the wine 94 points for Wine Spectator in 2009.

The fill levels are excellent (into neck). The labels are slightly soiled. The capsules are in perfect condition.

Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément is the oldest vineyard in Bordeaux. It is located on the border of the city of Bordeaux in the appellation of Pessac-Léognan. In 1305 it was named after its owner at the time, Pope Clement V, who bestowed the estate to the bishopric of Bordeaux one year later. During the French Revolution, all possessions of the church where confiscated and sold, ushering in a turbulent time for the vineyard. It often changed hands and was eventually devastated for the most part by a heavy hail storm in 1937. In 1939 the Château was purchased by Paul Montagne, who began its reconstruction. Château Pape Clément was mentioned in the Graves wine classification of 1959 and today it is one of the most popular estates in Pessac-Léognan. It is currently co-owned by Montagne’s Son Léo and the wine magnate Bernard Margez, and is assisted by the oenologist Michel Rolland.

Château Pape Clément has a vineyard area of 32.5 hectares, of which 30 hectares are planted with red wine grapes, 51 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 46 % Merlot, 2 % Petit Verdot and 1 % Cabernet Franc. The remaining 2.5 hectares are planted with 45 % Sauvignon Blanc, 45 % Sémillon and 10 % Muscadelle. The vines are at least 27 years old, many a little older still. The red wine is matured for 18 months in oak barrels. The average annual production of Grand Vin is 7000 cases.
