3 1862 $1 Virginia Confederate Treasury Notes
A group of three Virginia Treasury Notes, each denominated at one dollar and issued during the American Civil War in 1862 by the Commonwealth of Virginia. These Richmond-issued notes, dated May 15, July 21, and July 22 respectively, each bear the title "Virginia Treasury Note" and promise to pay one dollar to the bearer on demand at the state treasury. The central vignette features a seated female allegory clutching agricultural implements with a maritime vessel in the background, symbolizing commerce and agrarian enterprise. Portraits of John Letcher, Governor of Virginia during the Civil War, appear on the left beneath a bold red "1" counter. The numeral "ONE" is repeated within an ornate medallion on the lower right, with signatures, serial numbers, and plate letters varying across the set. Printed by Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond.
