A two piece group of detailed natural history studies published by Lemercier in Paris for Librairie Charles Delagrave, a noted French publisher of scientific and educational works. Created for the Nouveau Dictionnaire General des Peches (New General Dictionary of Fishing), the plates depict two trout species: the brown trout (Truite Commune, Var. brune; Trutta fario Sieb) and the sea trout (Truite Saumonee; Trutta trutta Sieb). Finely hand-colored and lithographed by Mesnel, they display the precision and artistry characteristic of French zoological illustration of the period. Each is matted with a hand-painted border signed Branca and presented in gilt wooden frames under glass, with Branca Inc. certificates of authenticity mounted on the verso.
