Pair of 25 cent fractional currency notes issued during the 5th series of United States fractional paper money, printed in 1874. These notes feature the engraved portrait of Robert J. Walker, former Secretary of the Treasury, positioned on the left side of the obverse. To the right of his portrait is the denomination "25 CENTS" printed over a red Treasury seal surrounded by ornate scrollwork. Above, the note is marked "UNITED STATES" and "TWENTY FIVE," while below is the statement "FRACTIONAL CURRENCY." Both notes include engraved signatures and intricate guilloche designs for anti-counterfeiting. The reverse side prominently displays the denomination "25 CENTS" in a decorative green medallion at the center, encircled by fine engraving and inscriptions including "TWENTY FIVE CENTS," and "COLUMBIAN BANK NOTE CO WASHINGTON D.C." The overall print is in green ink with symmetrical floral and geometric border details. Both notes show visible signs of circulation and wear consistent with age, including creasing, edge wear, staining, and partial tears, particularly to the note on the right which exhibits a vertical tear through the center and loss along the right edge.
