Extraordinary pair of 25 cents fractional currency notes issued by the United States during the latter half of the 19th century as a response to widespread coin shortages during and following the Civil War. Each note prominently features the portrait of William P. Fessenden, former Secretary of the Treasury, rendered in intricate engraved detail. The reverse sides present symmetrical green printing depicting "This Note is Exchangeable for United States Notes By Assistant Treasurers And Designated Depositories Of The United States in the sums not less than Three Dollars. Receivable In Payment Of All Dues To The United States Less Than Five Dollars Except Customs. Columbian Bank Note Co. Washington, D.C. - Patented July 24 1866 - Act of March 3d 1863." These fractional notes, printed on a blend of cotton and fiber paper without metal security threads or watermarks, were among the earliest forms of federally issued small denomination paper money used in daily commerce.
