2pc 1863 & 1866 $1 State of North Carolina Civil War Banknotes
Two historical one-dollar banknotes issued by the State of North Carolina during the American Civil War era, dated 1863 and 1866 respectively. The first note, dated January 1st, 1863, from Raleigh, is printed in black and red ink and features a more elaborate design. The top-center vignette depicts two seated allegorical female figures flanking a large ornamental "1." One figure holds a cornucopia symbolizing abundance, while the other supports the numeral "1." Behind them is a busy industrial scene with three smoking chimneys, various buildings, and stacks of goods, representing manufacturing and commerce. To the left of this scene are three sailing ships and dockside barrels, symbolizing maritime trade. The note is marked "No. 321" in red ink and signed by "Henry Hardie" for the Public Treasurer. The reverse side of the note is blank but exhibits evidence of print bleed-through and handwritten notations. The second note, dated January 1st, 1866, was issued in also Raleigh and is printed in black ink on light tan paper. The obverse features an allegorical female figure standing beside a column, representing Liberty or Justice. The denomination "ONE DOLLAR" is printed in large type to the right of the figure, along with the text "Will pay to bearer at the Treasury." A small vignette of a sailing ship appears below the word "TREASURY." The note is hand-numbered "12571" and includes handwritten text indicating a redemption date on or before January 1st, 1866, as well as the signature of the Public Treasurer. Along the left margin, it states "Receivable in payment of public dues." The reverse is blank but displays bleed-through from the printed and handwritten elements on the obverse. These two notes provide a visual and textual representation of North Carolina's fiscal operations during the Civil War, combining allegorical, maritime, and industrial imagery with handwritten issuance details. 1863 banknote: 160mm x 70mm. 1866 banknote: 135mm x 55mm.
