Collection of 12 identified Civil War CDVs of 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillerymen. The soldiers are: (1) Capt. Morris H. Sanford as 2nd Lt. (WIA October 1864 at Cedar Creek); (2) 2nd Lieut. Hiram D. Gaylord as 1st Sgt. (died November 1863); (3) 2nd Lieut. Salmon A. Granger as Sgt.; (4) 2nd Lieut. Charles A. Reynolds as Cpl.; (5) Capt. Henry Skinner; (6) Pvt. Darwin S. Starks (died August 1863); (7) Qtr. Master Sgt. Edwin R. Canfield; (8) Cpl. Henry A. Rexford (KIA June 1864 at Cold Harbor); (9) Cpl. Isaac R. Knapp; (10) Sgt. Timothy A. Hart; (11) Sgt. Henry A. Dayton (WIA July 1864 at Harper's Ferry); (12) Pvt. Sherman A. Apley, wearing medal ID shield (MIA June 1864 at Cold Harbor and presumed killed, no further record). The 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery was originally organized in September 1862 and suffered appalling casualties at Cold Harbor and Petersburg. The regiment was called back to Washington in July 1864 in order to check Jubal Early's drive on the Capitol, and then transferred to the Shenandoah Valley seeing action at Winchester, Fisher Hill and New Market. The ''heaviest returned to Petersburg in December and participated in the Appomattox campaign including the battle of Sailor's Creek. The regiment mustered out in August 1865 having sustained over 250 battle casualties. CDV collection is in very good condition with moderate wear and soiling.
