Undated letter fragment from Sergeant Jonathan Rupert of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company F, to his brother. Excerpt: ''…Two hundred cavalry cross the river and find that the fording has been obstructed so that artillery can not cross. After the cavalry scouts around through the Rebel camp and gets hoe cakes apples and a sabre that the rebels in a fright left behind they returned and reported to our Gen. Wessel…we withdraw from this place and march to Franklin where a pretty brisk artillery duel takes place. our shells aggravate the citizens and soldiers in the rebellious little town and they return shell briskly but fortunately no shot or shell proves effective. the nearest to our regiment was a 10 pound solid shot that hit the roots of a large pine tree within three rods…but it went harmless into the Virginia soil there to lay and rust. we stayed here until about 3 o'clock in the afternoon when we withdrew…we marched about 3 miles homeward and stop for the night. after making coffee & eating supper I gathered dry weeds that grew in the field where we stoped and made myself a bed…the boys have all gone to bed and are snoring…these mornings the drum beats at 6 o clock and all those that refuse to get up…is exposed to a court martial…'' Jonathan Rupert mustered into Company F as a Sergeant on 6 July 1861 and mustered out on 18 July 1865 at Washington, D.C. The 28th Pennsylvania saw action at Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wauhatchie and during several battles of the Atlanta Campaign. Ink letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 2pp. Slight overall soiling and creasing. Bite to margin obscures a few words at letter's edge. Very good condition.
