<td width="100%">
A fine, scarce 27 pc. set of Chinese "Rice Grain" pattern , underglaze blue, porclain ware, otherwise known as Gambroon ware, ca.1930s. The set complete, even with most of the original packing, is comprised of 13 cups and 14 saucers (one extra). Each cup and saucer is hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue, qinghua, with a coiled dragon design that originalted during the reign of emperor Kangxi 1662-1722. Furthermore, each cup and saucer is decorated with a special pieced design known as rice-grain or Gambroon. This is where the potter would hand-cut tiny pieces out of the walls of the ware prior to applying the clear glaze and firing. The clear glaze would fill the perforations, creating translucent "rice grained" windows. The clear glaze in these pieces exhibit a light green-jade tint. This style of ware was first invented in Persia around the 12th century AD. The Chinese copied this style starting in the 17th and 18th centuries. The nickname Gambroon ware came from the East Indies Trading Company station in Gamboon on the Persian Gulf. The quality is quite fine for this scarce type of export ware. The condition is excellent, without any injury or repair.
