In this case, the host coin (probably a Roman denarius) was manufactured as a copper coin having a silver jacket to give it the "look" of full-weight and fineness. This ancient counterfeit was then restruck by the Bar Kokhba rebels. Upon resting in the soil for nearly two millenia, the thin silver coating was partially eaten away, more fully exposing the copper core, mainly at the periphery. As Bar Kokhba understrikes, fourrées are very rarely seen.
Estimated Value $475-725.

Our item number 110249
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
