24K GOLD 1668 2 ESCUDO GOLD COIN EMERALD RING
24K GOLD 1668 2 ESCUDO GOLD COIN EMERALD RING Posthumous issue of the Charles II issue 2 Escudo. Minted for many years under the reign of Philip V. Carolus appears on the obverse while Philippus appears on reverse. While all coinage from the 1666-1668 period are rare, no recent record of a specimen with the posthumous legend has come to market in recent years. Perhaps the only recent example of its kind. Several explanations for the Phillip IV / Carolus II coinage are possible, the most plausible seems to be that Bogota in 1666 found itself with a supply of expensive but still serviceable Phillip IV obverse dies. The obverse dies remained in service and Carolus II was added to the reverse legend until new obverse dies were made. Fully struck cross and bold shield. Clearly defined NR mintmark. Set in 24k gold emerald and diamond ring. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Phillip Flemming. Coin weighs 6.73g. Weight: 45.2g total weight Condition: VGC EST. $3000-9000
