MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) - Stop-Motion Puppet Armature from Original Production Armature Replica - A stop-motion puppet armature replica made from the original production armature from Ernest B. Schoedsack's Mighty Joe Young. Willis O'Brien, who famously animated King Kong in 1933, supervised Mighty Joe Young's stop-motion effects, with a small team of animators, including Ray Harryhausen, in his first feature film assignment, handling most of the hands-on animation work.

This armature replica was one of three created by Doug Beswick for a German toy commercial in the 1980s. It was made as an exact copy of the original Joe Young armature as borrowed from the collection of Bob Burns. This armature is made of machined metal with extensive articulation, including the jaw, neck, back, arms, legs, fingers, and toes. The head, a gray resin gorilla skull with teeth, was cast from the original armature's head. Also included are two metal tie-downs for attaching each foot to the surface of a stage. It exhibits some discoloration to the metal from age. Dimensions: 9" x 10" x 10" (23 cm x 25.5 cm x 25.5 cm)

Contains mechanical components; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.

Estimate: $6,000 - 12,000
