Henry Atkin box lock Side by Side shotgun, 12 gauge, Serial #2421. The shotgun is in near fine overall condition with 28” barrels with a full-length solid rib marked, “HENRY ATKIN LTD (FROM PURDEY’S) 88 JERMYN ST LONDON SW”. The barrels retain approximately 90-95% of the muted blue finish with light handling marks consistent with field use. The receiver is finished in the white with 60-70% coverage in fine scroll engraving, the rib and release lever are both inscribed with the number “1”. The shotgun has a tang mounted safety with “SAFE” in gold letters, double triggers and auto ejectors. The barrel flats show numerous proof and acceptance marks and indicate the shotgun is chambered for 2 ½” shells. The finely checkered English Walnut stocks are in very good condition featuring a splinter fore end with an Anson release, straight grip stock with a blank escutcheon plate in the butt, which ends with a solid rubber recoil pad providing a 14 ¼” LOP. The bores are good and the action is tight on face. Founded in 1821 by Joseph Lang, Henry Atkin later worked for James Purdey & Sons, before opening his own shop in London in 1875. His early guns were marked Henry Atkin (From Purdey’s). A fine English boxlock from a famous London maker. Est.: $4,000-$8,000. (C+R/PPT).
