Period Spencer Custom Sporting Rifle with Heavy Octagon Barrel Marked “J.B. Gemmer (Who was successor to Hawken) St. Louis”. The rifle shows double barrel keys and iron fore end cap with 32” octagon barrel measuring 1¼” across the center and rifle weighs 14.5 lbs. .52 caliber bore size utilizing original Spencer military rifle round. The action is a military version with top of the receiver flattened and adapted to the barrel byGemmer. A German silver plate was added to fill the saddle ring inlet in stock and frame, S/N 54896. The condition is very good retaining most original brown on the barrel and case color going silvery on frame andaction but some hints of rainbow colors. The stocks are very good with minor staining and aging. A well fashioned and long “V” notch rear sight by Gemmer is in its original dovetail with matching blade front. The irontipped ramrod probably the original. The action is good and the bore is very good. 1 of 2 known “Gemmer” marked sporting Spencers the other in the Fur Trade museum.
