Sharps Model 1874 single shot sporting rifle, .45-70 caliber, Serial #161031. This sporting rifle weighs 12 pounds 14 ounces with a 30” octagon barrel with Cooper Western blade front and ladder rear sights with the Walter Cooper Western buckhorn addition. The barrel has gone to brown patina with dents and mars associated with field use. The barrel address and “OLD RELIABLE” marks are sharp and legible. The receiver is a mottled, silvered case hardening with double set triggers and a Sharps marked period tang sight. The smooth wood stock shows heavy use with losses on both sides of the fore end and at the left side of the wrist. The butt stock ends with a textured steel shotgun butt plate. The lot includes a Sharp’s factory letter confirming the rifle’s features and indicates the gun was invoiced at the Bridgeport factory on September 24, 1878 to James G. Dow, Bozeman, Montana Territory. The rifle was part of a huge shipment of 225 guns in all. The shipment is believed to have been for a straw buyer for Walter Cooper, also of Bozeman, Montana, who was then in bankruptcy. A nice, honest Sharps with great Montana history. Est.: $7,000-$14,000. (Antique).
