Meachum style conversion of Sharps to sporting rifle, showing heavy octagon barrel marked, “W. COOPER BOZEMAN, M.T.”, Serial #C36905 on the action, .45 caliber bore with a straight case. The barrel measures 30” and is approximately 1 3/8” across at the muzzle, the rifle weighs 16 pounds. The barrel shows no serial numbers and was likely made by Walter Cooper as indicated by his mark being stamped at the breech. The metal surfaces show a patina finish with light to moderate scattered erosion and pitting with some blue mixed in on the barrel. The barrel shows an old coating of varnish added. The stocks are worn and show a repair at the wrist, dings, mars, scratches, weathering and some small losses in the fore end, fair to good overall. The butt plate is heavily rusted, and there is some weathering and shrinking around the butt plate. The rifle is mounted with double triggers, shows a Lawrence marked rear ladder sight with the Walter Cooper Western buckhorn addition and a large, Western style blade and post front sight. The action is good, the bore is fair to good with some erosion at the breech from heavy shooting. An attractive Sharps rifle that could honestly be called a “Buffalo Gun”. The lot includes a copy of the Spring 1999 Sharps Collector Association Volume VI, Number 3 SCA Report with an article on Walter Cooper, a copy of a November/December 1981 Man at Arms article on Walter Cooper and additional documentation on the gun. Est.: $6,000-$12,000. (Antique).
