Sharps Model 1874 single shot modified from a Business rifle, .50 3 ¼” caliber, Serial #160413. The rifle weighs in at 15 pounds and 14 ounces with 28 ¾” half round to octagon barrel that is 1 ¼” diameter at the muzzle. The metal surfaces have gone to medium brown patina with a special order front reversible ivory and gold and ladder sights, marked, “NORTH. POLE.” AND “50.CA.” on the barrel flat in front of the breech. The rifle has double set triggers, checkered shotgun butt, the lock numbers are matching with no number on the barrel. The smooth wood stock is in good condition with dents and mars, professionally made in the Sharps style but extra heavy. The lot includes a Sharps factory letter and a copy of the Sharps Collector Association report Volume XIII, Number 2 with an article on the rifle. The letter indicates the rifle was invoiced on April 14, 1877 to Sharps Agent, E.S. Harris, 177 Broadway, New York City. It was noted as a Model 1874 Business rifle, with the caliber noted as .45 caliber and a list price of $35. Additionally, the documentation with the rifle includes a copy of an invoice indicating purchase from the “Harolds Club Gun Collection” in February of 1980. The article in the Sharps Association magazine illustrates the lengths to which attempts have been made to research the North Pole connection and the history of the rifle before sale by the Harolds Club. A truly unique and interesting Sharps. Est.: $6,000-$12,000. (Antique).
