Sharps Model 1874 single shot rifle, .50-70 caliber, Serial #C51505. The rifle is in good overall condition with a 30” round barrel with a German silver knife blade front and an R.S. Lawrence patented ladder style rear sights. The rifle has a full-length military style stock with an iron cap, barrels bands and springs. There is an old repair on top of the barrel. The barrel has taken on a mottled brown patina. The receiver is primarily a silver/grey case hardening with light surface erosion. The smooth wood stock is in good condition with dents and mars consistent with field use. The butt stock has a patch box on the right side and ends with a smooth steel butt plate. The lot includes a Sharps Factory letter confirming the rifle’s features and indicating the gun was invoiced April 14, 1873 to Sharps dealer, J.F. Schmelzer of Leavenworth, Kansas. The list price was $20, however the weight was not noted. The letter states that many of these Army type rifles were used in the early buffalo harvest in Kansas. The bore is good and the action is crisp. Est.: $3,000-$6,000. (Antique).
