Early Colt Lightning pump action rifle, .38-40 WCF caliber, Serial #291. The rifle is in fair overall condition with a 23” octagon barrel with the front sight removed and the rear semi-buckhorn sight is missingthe elevator. The metal surfaces have gone to a dark brown mottled patina with light surface erosion and old dried oil. There are areas of light paint overspray that may clean. The barrel address and calibermarkings are sharp and the medium frame rifle has the early open top action. The wooden stock is I fair condition with a full-length lateral crack on the fore end with a sliver of wood missing. The buttstock shows heavywear with cracks and small losses at the tang and a 2” “R” carved into the right side. The butt ends with a smooth steel crescent butt. The bore is dark and the action functions on this early, 1st year ofproduction Colt Lightning circa 1884. The rifle descended from a 3rd generation pioneer family in the Carson City/Reno area of the Eastern Sierras and was a barn find at the family ranch. Est.: $700-$1,400.
