Heavy barrel full stock percussion plains rifle with iron mounts and Wells Fargo shipping label still attached. This rifle was formally the property of “Bob” Nichols, long time collector and president of Pomona Valley Bank, who obtained it from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, who received the Tibbetts Collection as a donation and this rifle was a part of the donation.
Jonathan Tibbet was an early California pioneer who knew Kit Carson, John C. Fremont and other notable pioneers. He was well acquainted with the Hispanic rancho owners of the Southern California area and particularly in Riverside, San Bernardino and the San Gabriel Valley regions.
The rifle measures 54” in overall length with a 38” rifled barrel of nearly .50 caliber. The rear sight is a large buckhorn type with a blade front sight, double set triggers, plain iron mounts and tang drilled for peep sight (missing). The rifle is in untouched, as found out of the attic condition with a dark, almost black patina. Minor erosion and rust with no modern cleaning. The stock is sound with light scorching from, “Many Campfires”. The stock is fair to good with some losses at the top edge of its fore end, small cracks and evidence of carrying and frontier use. An old, period ram rod is included. A research booklet on Jonathan Tibbet born 1822, Franklin County, Ohio who came to California, in 1849 is included. The Tibbet family were among the first pioneers to settle in El Monte, California and he was engaged in the freighting business to and from Salt Lake City, Utah. His California reminiscences as told to Frank D. Thomson, is included (copy) which mentions the 1929 donations before his death in 1930. From the John B. Robinson Collection. Est.: $1,500-$3,000. (Antique).
