1842 Pattern Musket in .69 caliber marked “Palmetto Armoury S.C.” on center of the lock with Columbia S.C. 1852” on rear of the lock. Uncleaned and as found condition with dark patina on metal. Pitting around firing areas and breach but generally good metal and marking. There is a nailed in copper sheet behind the hammer presumably as a flash guard. The dark oil-stained stock is uncleaned with a very old and aged museum collection tag marked in block letter “Palmetto”. The stock is generally good but stained dark from oil and use. Some small losses behind the lock and along channel for ramrod which is brassed tipped and of same era. The stock shows other minor imperfections associated with military use and storage. The action works well and the nipple shows a lot of firing and age. .69 caliber smoothbore. Also included with this rifle are the following from a collector’s display:
1. Brass buckle with S.C. in fancy intertwined script letter measuring 3” across the center. Unmarked and fair to good condition missing 1 keeper on the back.
2. Proper style bayonet marked “S. C.” with scabbard and hanger. Very good condition. (Not fit to this musket but could be opened slightly if desired).
3. Silver 2 piece ornate buckle with Palmetto tree and motto on red leather belt. Very good plus condition.
An interesting display of South Carolina marked artifacts. Provenance: musket last sold from Fred Slayton collection in Little John’s auction circa 1990s. (Antique) Est.: $1750-$3500
