Ultra-rare breech loading fowling piece signed on the left side of the action “Charier Baltimore”. John Charier of Baltimore worked 1822-1836. Consignors note on the trigger guard states “Trial of 1837 at West Point”. The action lifts up to expose a nipple mounted in the breech end of the barrel and is fired by a striker activated by the outside hammer protecting shooter’s eyes from cap and firing. The gun is simplycontracted and full stocked to the muzzle. Measures 56” overall with a 37” half round to octagon barrel of approximately .58 caliber smoothbore or 24 GA. The condition is fair to good with dark brown patina and wood lightly cleaned with steel wool showing a few stress cracks and imperfections. Old period ramrod retained. Provenance: The estate of Gregory T. Fisher, Little Johns, Johnny Bassett collection who obtained from iconic collector Henry Stewart in trade. Mr. Stewart knew of 3 such arms by Charier of Baltimore of which one was in a museum. This is a museum quality rarity. (Antique) Est.: $10,000-$20,000
