Southern Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun marked “T.W. Cofer” of Portsmouth, Virginia. Signed on each lock and simply American style scroll engraved. Cofer was an important gunsmith and inventor who patented a revolver and supplied arms to the confederate forces during the Civil War era. Small I’D label at the center of the butt stock last sold at Fred Slayton arms collection by Little Johns in the 1990s. A research book recentlypublished on confederate era shotguns has recently been published and documents extensive use by confederacy who were desperate for arms in the Civil War. With 10GA or worn out 12 GA showing thin barrelsfrom use. Brown patina overall with scattered rust and erosion. The right lock works well but the left is not hold on full cock and nipple is broken. The stock is worn but the wood with checkering has been smoothed fromcarry and use. Signatures are well defined on the locks. Period ramrod included.
