Rare and original wheelock rifle with root burl wood stock bone inlays and well engraved lock signed “A.P.” Typical Germanic form measuring 43” overall with a 32” barrel of .64 caliber deep rifled. The barrel retainsmost of its original blue and bright on the lock with minor aging and almost fine overall. The bone inlays decorated in floral motifs with large panel of stag on cheek piece. The elaborately root burled stock wasmostly made in one piece with small spliced in areas in its original manufacture which is due to knots and a piece of burl this large came from a gigantic and old tree. Root burl was almost non-existent in Europe by the endof the 18th century and is rarely encountered on any long arm but exceptionally so in a wheelock! Horn butt plate. Mechanism is complete and set trigger is working. Old rack or museum #30 on guard. An exceptional andworld class wheelock. Est.: $7500-$15,000
