Saxson Model 1835 Musket in .70 caliber percussion marked “Crause” in “Herzberg”. The stock is carved in period block letters “F.M. Utley Ala” behind the trigger guard and other initials “H.H.B.” upside down on the right side of butt. An old typed note attached to the trigger guard states “Francis M. Utley, Pvt. Co. F. 26 Miss Inf.” (Anna Terry Guards). Enlisted “Iuka, Miss, Sept 1 1861, Hospital at Bowling Green, Ky from Dec 1861 to Jan 1862, captured at Petersburg, VA April 2 1865, Sent to Ft. Delaware Del. Took the oath of allegiance/to June 11 1865 and released and released gun found with the family in North Alabama around 1980”. Collection tag #29 is attached to the buttstock and last sold in the Fred Slayton collection by Little John’s early 1990s. The condition is fair to good showing some pitting from firing on the lock and breech. Rear sight removed. Ramrod retained. Lock works but no half cock. The stock is good with normal aging from use. Fred Slayton was a recognized confederate collector who obtained many of his arms directly from descendants 40-70 years ago. (Antique) Est.: $800-$1600
